Reger Rizzo & Darnall LLP is a multi-disciplinary law firm of more than 80 attorneys and staff, headquartered in Philadelphia, with offices in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York. After beginning with a small office in 1992 and growing to multiple offices, the firm hired a manager of information systems in 2001 to oversee their servers and desktops. As the firm continued to expand further, their IT needs stretched too far for one person to handle. Inadequate remote access, inefficient technology scaling, aging infrastructure, and a need for stronger security measures eventually led the firm to seek a new solution. In 2022, Reger Rizzo & Darnall moved to the Boxtop cloud, alleviating their IT issues, and taking the pressure off their internal IT department.

Challenges

Throughout the firm’s 30+ years of operating, Reger Rizzo & Darnall added multiple new locations and hired dozens of attorneys and staff. As a result, Paul Toms, Manager of Information Systems, found himself stretched thin with a multitude of responsibilities. 

Scaling servers, licenses, and IT resources became progressively difficult and costly, and Paul found himself with insufficient time for critical upgrades. The firm’s remote access solutions, a combination of RDS servers and GoToMyPC, suffered from performance issues. “None of the solutions in place were ideal when everyone was forced to go remote,” Paul says. The fact that Zoom and Microsoft Teams did not work within their remote desktop environment only compounded this issue. In addition, Reger Rizzo & Darnall’s aging servers were in need of upgrades and replacements, and the firm was hearing increased demand from clients for more extensive cybersecurity protections.  Frequent upgrades were needed to address the rapidly evolving threat landscape, and the process became expensive and onerous to manage.
